⭐ Why it is famous
The Āzhi Ther, a 96-ton, 30-metre chariot pulled by thousands each April, and the Kamalālayam tank — one of the largest temple tanks in India. Birthplace of the Trinity of Carnatic music.
📜 Pilgrimage history
A Tevaram sthala expanded by the Cholas from the 9th century; the Thyāgarāja worship (Somāskanda in bronze) spread from here to the Sapta Vidanga temples of the delta. Tyāgarāja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri were all born in this town.
