Śrī Āṇḍāḷ Temple, Srivilliputhur

Āṇḍāḷ and Vaṭapatraśāyī (Viṣṇu) · Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar · Tamil Nadu

Home of Āṇḍāḷ and the Tiruppāvai

Why it is famous

The birthplace of Āṇḍāḷ, the only woman among the twelve Āḻvārs, whose Tiruppāvai is sung across South India through Mārgaḻi. Its 59-metre eleven-tier gopuram is the emblem on the Tamil Nadu state seal.

📜 Pilgrimage history

Periyāḻvār found the infant Āṇḍāḷ under a tulasī plant in the temple garden; she garlanded herself with the Lord's garland and finally merged with Ranganātha at Srirangam. The temple's Āṇḍāḷ garland is still sent to Tirumala and Srirangam.
