Why it is famous

The riot of painted stucco figures on its towers, the Hall of a Thousand Pillars, the Potramarai tank, and the nightly palanquin procession of Sundareśvara to Mīnākṣī's chamber.

📜 Pilgrimage history

A shrine has stood here since at least the 7th century; the present complex was largely rebuilt by the Nayaks between 1559 and 1655 after the Delhi Sultanate sack of 1310.
