⭐ Why it is famous
The liṅga said to have been formed by Śiva himself from the sand and nectar of the cosmic pot (kumbha) that came to rest here after the deluge. The Mahāmaham festival, once in twelve years, brings millions to bathe in the Mahāmaham tank.
📜 Pilgrimage history
The oldest and largest Śiva temple of Kumbakonam, with Chola foundations and a 128-foot nine-tier eastern gopura of the Nāyaka period. Its navaratna maṇḍapa and the sixteen-pillar hall with the zodiac carvings are much studied.
