Gommaṭeśvara Bāhubali, Shravanabelagola

Bāhubali (Gommaṭeśvara) · Shravanabelagola, Hassan · Karnataka

A 57-foot monolith on Vindhyagiri, bathed once in twelve years

Why it is famous

The world's tallest free-standing monolithic statue carved in the round, made about 981 CE, and the Mahāmastakābhiṣeka held every twelve years when the image is anointed with milk, saffron and sandal from a scaffold.

📜 Pilgrimage history

Cāmuṇḍarāya, minister of the Ganga king Rācamalla, had the Bāhubali carved from a single granite outcrop. The twin hills of Chandragiri and Vindhyagiri hold Jain bastis and inscriptions from the 6th century onward, and Chandragupta Maurya is said to have fasted to death here.
