Tradition holds that a Tirumala pilgrimage is incomplete without darśan of Padmāvatī, who emerged from a golden lotus in the tank here.

The shrine is referenced from the 12th century and expanded under Vijayanagara patronage; the annual Kārtika Brahmotsavam culminating in Panchami Tīrtham draws lakhs.
